Pastor Don's Journal Articles
There’s a whole other church out there! And Sunday I decided to spend my time worshiping and playing with them. I’m talking about the babies, preschoolers and young children that number in the hundreds and fill entire floors of our church campus.
I turned the pulpit over to the very capable hands and voice of Bryan Jones, left my tie and jacket at home, and got down on the floor with the most precious children in the world – right here at First Baptist Alexandria.
It wasn’t my idea originally, to be honest. Pastor Kim has been concerned for some time about the increasing difficulty we are having getting volunteers to commit to this ministry – even as God keeps sending us more and more little souls. Her thought was that if I volunteered and stepped aside from what I love the most doing – preaching God’s Word – it would show the importance of everybody taking their part, too. Leadership by example, as she put it delicately but directly.
I spent the morning with some of our children and I had a wonderful time doing it. They are bright and beautiful, inquisitive and open to the things of God.
We made things, sang and jumped, listened to Bible stories, and prayed around the circle. Some children do talk about their parents and siblings and the goings on at home – but I shut my ears and also happen to suffer from a very short memory, so don’t worry.
I was most of all impressed with the quality of the adults who volunteer and serve regularly in these departments. The most committed, patient and resourceful people we have, for sure. I was mostly just observing – they were pouring out their hearts and giving it their all. We are so very fortunate to have them working with the children. They’re great – we just need more people to join their ranks.
My prayer is that you will consider volunteering at least once and preferably on some regular kind of rotation. You’ll be the one who gets the biggest blessing of all. It’s the brightest, growing-est spot at First Baptist, and you’ll be on the ground floor of it, so to speak.
Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” - Mark 9:37.
He puts it even more directly than Pastor Kim!
This Sunday, June 19, is Father’s Day, and I’ll be back in white shirt, suit and tie – preaching. I missed seeing the rest of you so please be present and give me the chance this week. But half-way through the 11 o’clock service, when the young children leave with skips and jumps on their way to their own service with Jason Nobles, you may notice that I’m just a bit torn about whether to stay or go on out with them.
