What Mary did know
"I am the Lord's servant, may it be to me as you have said."
Last night at my small group we read the account of where the angel came to Mary and told her that she was going be be with child, and this child would be the savior of the world. Cool news right? Talk about responsibility, this teenage girl, has just been entrusted with the Messiah, could this be right? Wasn't he supposed to come as a king? Who was she? Not nobility that was for sure. What about him being a military leader? Who was going to teach him about that? Joseph? What does a carpenter know about such things? Would Joseph even believe her? Would the townspeople understand, what about her parents would anyone believe her, would they accept her? There are many things that I'm sure Mary did not understand. Lets face it as far as crazy circumstances go, her's were pretty impressive.
There were, however, a few important things that she did know. She knew that her God was God and trusted in Him over circumstances, and she knew her position in light of that; she was his servant. Mary I'm sure did not understand when the angel said that the Holy Spirit was going to overshadow her and she would conceive. She did not get the details of how life was going to play out or even the comfort speech of "it will all be ok." She was only told the first step, her response was obedience.
How often when we are called to something is our response either disbelief, negotiating, delay, or demanding of more details? We are all guilty of some or all of these and many more tactics. Why do we not echo the words of this teenager who shows incredible wisdom. We are the Lord's servants. Where he sends us we will go, what He says we will repeat, the things He asks of us, we will do gladly. Why? because a servant does what will delight His master. Mary's focus was not on her, her circumstance or possible outcomes it was where it had always been, on the Lord, her Master.
