Bob Rhoads
Pastor, FBCA Deaf Congregation
I was born deaf and I grew up in a Christian home in Lancaster, PA. I come from a long family line of the Mennonites since 1719 under the name of Mosemann and Herr. I graduated from Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, DC in 1984. I was the valedictorian. I graduated from East Carolina University, majoring in Therapeutic Recreation, in 1989. While I was at ECU, I was involved with Campus Crusade for Christ, now known as CRU. I was trained in evangelism and discipleship and I went on two summer projects: Daytona Beach 1986 and Thailand 1988. I had a summer internship as an assistant to the Pastor for Praising Hands Deaf Church at Lakewood Baptist Church in Long Beach, CA in 1987. It was my first experience leading the Deaf ministry. I gave my first sermon there.
I married a wonderful deaf Christian lady named Karen. Together, we have 5 wonderful children. They are hearing and quite fluent in sign language. And they love the Lord.
Karen and I have been missionaries since 1995. The Lord gave us a VISION to pave the way in the Deaf world. We reached out to Deaf college students and trained them for ministry opportunities at Gallaudet University. We were on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ for 13 years. We launched a new ministry called Deaf Leadership Ministries to raise up Deaf leaders for ministry and church for 3 years then I joined staff with Youth For Christ. In 2008, I was able to restart the high school ministry with Deaf Teen Quest at Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick, MD. I am now gradually changing job positions from the Area Coordinator for Frederick county, MD, to the Metro Coordinator for Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia. My new job is to find potential ministry sites and find and train local volunteers. I am also leading a Bible Study group on Gallaudet campus.
In 2012, the Lord led me to a pastor position with the First Baptist Deaf Congregation sooner than I thought. God is making the path clearer and brighter than before upon this VISION journey that my wife and I have been on for years. The goal with prayer is to provide regular training in evangelism and discipleship as well as leadership with the Deaf Congregation so we can better reach out to the local Deaf community for Jesus and, one day, across the USA and around the world. I plan to connect my YFC ministry to the deaf church for outreach opportunities. There is only 1% of Deaf Christians who are serving the Lord wholeheartedly. Please join me in prayer and reach out to the Deaf with God’s love and plan for their lives.
